Jonathan Le Tocq

Jonathan Le Tocq, a prominent figure in Guernsey's political landscape and a current member of the States of Guernsey, admitted to serious sexual offences involving children in Guernsey's Royal Court. The former chief minister pleaded guilty to 15 charges, which included making more than 2,400 indecent images of children, possessing extreme pornography, and sending indecent messages. His arrest occurred in July 2024, following an investigation into these heinous activities.

Le Tocq stepped down from the island's top political committee in September 2024 but retained his position as a States member, continuing to receive his salary. The case has drawn significant attention due to his high-profile role; he had finished ninth in the June 2024 general election, securing 8,002 votes, and was nominated for the position of the island's most senior politician, though not ultimately elected to it in July 2024.

Deputy Lindsay de Sausmarez, President of the Policy and Resources Committee and Guernsey's most senior politician, called for Le Tocq's immediate resignation, describing the situation as 'highly unusual' and 'particularly shocking'. In a statement, she expressed her shock, stating, 'I was as shocked as everyone else,' and emphasised the importance of an appropriate response. She further noted that Le Tocq's guilty plea had 'deepened my heartbreak and empathy for his victims', with her thoughts remaining with those affected, including family and church members. De Sausmarez described the details of 'these heinous crimes' as having shocked many 'to the core'.

If Le Tocq refuses to resign voluntarily, law officers could seek his removal through a petition requiring approval by the bailiff following sentencing. Le Tocq is due to be sentenced in January 2025 at Guernsey's Royal Court.
