Offence Summary

George Cottier admitted to possessing and making 20 indecent images of a child, including one category A image, and was sentenced to a 30-week suspended prison term at Liverpool Magistrates Court.

Full Description

A 39-year-old man from Wirral, Merseyside, has been sentenced following his admission to possessing and making indecent images of children. George Cottier, residing on Prenton Village Road in Prenton, appeared at Liverpool Magistrates Court on 7 November 2024 for a sentencing hearing after pleading guilty to serious sexual offences.

The offences occurred on 4 October 2024, when Cottier was found to have one category A image—the most severe classification—one category B image, and 18 category C images of indecent photographs of children. Category A images depict the most explicit and harmful content, highlighting the gravity of the material involved. Cottier pleaded guilty to one count of possessing indecent photographs of a child and three counts of making indecent photographs of a child.

During the hearing, the court considered Cottier's circumstances and determined there was a realistic prospect of rehabilitation. As a result, he received a 30-week prison sentence, suspended for 18 months. In addition to the suspended term, Cottier was ordered to complete 25 days of a rehabilitation activity requirement and 140 hours of unpaid work. He was also made subject to a 10-year Sexual Harm Prevention Order and required to register on the Sex Offenders Register for the same duration. Furthermore, he was ordered to pay £85 in court costs and a victim surcharge of £187.

The case was reported by the Wirral Globe, with the article authored by Jamie Bowman, Digital and Audience Content Editor. The offences fall under UK legislation prohibiting the possession and creation of indecent images of children, aimed at protecting minors from sexual exploitation. No further details on the investigation were provided, but the sentencing reflects the court's balance between punishment and rehabilitation in this instance.
