Offence Summary

Durville Barzey, a 43-year-old man from Manchester, was jailed for 19 years after being found guilty of multiple serious sexual offences against a young girl, including rape and sexual assault.

Full Description

A man from Manchester, described by authorities as 'predatory' and 'extremely dangerous', has been sentenced to 19 years in prison for committing several serious sexual offences against a child. Durville Barzey, aged 43, appeared at Manchester Crown Court on 19 December 2023, where he was convicted on seven counts related to the abuse of a young girl.

The offences, which targeted vulnerable children, included three counts of engaging in sexual activity with a girl aged 13, sexual assault of a girl aged under 13, rape of a 13-year-old girl, engaging in sexual activity with a girl aged 13, and attempting to cause or incite a girl aged 13 to engage in sexual activity. Barzey will serve a minimum term of 15 years before being eligible for parole consideration.

The case was investigated by Greater Manchester Police's child protection investigation unit. PC Ellease Martindale, from the unit, commented on the significance of the conviction: 'This investigation uncovered an extremely dangerous offender who was harming our most vulnerable members of society. This is a significant result for all other children in the community who could have been subject to similar offending by a predatory man.' She further emphasised the force's commitment to pursuing justice, stating: 'Barzey is a dangerous offender and I am pleased that he is behind bars and away from harming vulnerable children. I hope the sentence sends a strong message to the public that we will pursue all available lines of enquiry to ensure we can bring justice to victims of serious sexual assaults.'

The sentencing at Manchester Crown Court marks a crucial outcome in protecting the community from further harm by Barzey, whose actions were deemed particularly heinous due to the age of the victim and the nature of the offences. Greater Manchester Police continue to encourage victims to come forward, assuring support and dignity in reporting such crimes.
