Full Description

Charlie Bolland, a 25-year-old resident of Stephenson Road in Cowes on the Isle of Wight, appeared before the Isle of Wight Magistrates’ Court where he admitted to a series of serious sexual offences involving children. The case stemmed from a police sting operation conducted via the Kik messaging app, during which Bolland engaged in sexual communications with an individual he believed to be a 13-year-old girl from Bournemouth. In reality, this was an undercover police officer.

The offences occurred between April 2019 and June 2020 in Newport on the Isle of Wight. Bolland pleaded guilty to three charges of making indecent images of children across Categories A, B, and C, one charge of attempting sexual communication with a child under 16, and one charge of possessing two extreme pornographic images involving bestiality. Prosecutor Lauren McConnell detailed that on 14 May 2020, Bolland initiated contact by sending a photo of himself aged 19 to the decoy profile. After receiving two decoy images, he responded explicitly, stating he wanted to 'teach her naughty stuff', and subsequently sent a selfie along with several explicit images while requesting pictures of the supposed girl in a bra.

Following the inappropriate exchanges, police arrested Bolland and seized his iPhone, which uncovered a cache of illegal material: 16 Category A child abuse images, 11 Category B images, and 18 Category C images, in addition to the two extreme bestiality images. No mitigation was offered on Bolland's behalf during the hearing. Notably, Bolland had no previous convictions.

The court bailed Bolland pending his sentencing at the Isle of Wight Crown Court on 12 December. He was ordered to register as a sex offender at Newport Police Station. This case highlights the effectiveness of online sting operations in tackling child sexual exploitation, as reported by the County Press.
