Offence Summary

Amit Sethi groomed and trafficked a vulnerable 15-year-old girl from Germany to the UK for sexual exploitation, manipulating her through an online relationship. He was sentenced to 14 years in prison and placed on the sex offenders' register for life.

Full Description

In 2021, South Wales Police investigated the disappearance of a 15-year-old girl from Germany, who was traced to an address in Treforest where 43-year-old Amit Sethi lived. Detectives discovered that Sethi had initiated an online relationship with the vulnerable minor, exploiting her weaknesses to convince her they shared a genuine romantic connection.

Sethi persisted in cultivating this manipulative relationship, ultimately arranging and funding her travel to the United Kingdom. Upon her arrival, the girl was located at Sethi's residence, leading to his immediate arrest. He was charged with human trafficking, sexual communication with a child, and causing a child to engage in sexual activity. Initially denying the allegations, Sethi later pleaded guilty to the sexual communication offence during court proceedings.

The victim was promptly safeguarded by authorities and repatriated to Germany. At Cardiff Crown Court last week, Judge [name not specified] sentenced Sethi to 14 years' imprisonment, describing him as an 'unrepentant sex offender' who 'showed no genuine remorse or insight' into his actions. The judge highlighted Sethi's controlling and manipulative behaviour, motivated by sexual exploitation. In addition to the custodial sentence, Sethi was ordered to register as a sex offender for life and received an indefinite Sexual Harm Prevention Order.

Detective Sergeant Laura Jones of South Wales Police commended the investigative efforts, stating: 'Detective Constable Stacey Vincent, the officer who led the case, worked tirelessly during this complex investigation facing many barriers such as dealing with cross-county police, foreign partner agencies and building relationships with German authorities in order to progress the investigation and gather evidence required for this case. Thanks to DC Vincent and the team’s determination, Sethi was handed a lengthy sentence and was brought to justice.' This case underscores the dangers of online grooming and the importance of international cooperation in combating child sexual exploitation, as reported by South Wales Police on 23 January 2023.
