Mihai Savescu, a 34-year-old Romanian national residing in Longton, Stoke-on-Trent, has been jailed for 17 years following his conviction on multiple counts of rape at Stoke-on-Trent Crown Court. The sentencing, which took place in October 2021, marks a significant victory for Staffordshire Police's rape and serious sexual offences unit, who praised the bravery of the victim whose evidence was pivotal in securing the conviction.

Detective Constable Diane Sproston from the unit described Savescu as 'predatory and manipulative' in a statement released to Stoke-on-Trent Live. She commended the victim, stating: 'I’d like to commend the victim who bravely came forward and reported these appalling crimes. She has shown incredible bravery and cooperation throughout the court process. I hope the sentence provides some form of closure and comfort knowing Savescu will be behind bars for a long time.'

The case highlights the challenges faced by victims in reporting sexual offences, with Staffordshire Police welcoming the substantial sentence as a deterrent. Savescu, originally from Chaplin Road in Longton, will face deportation to Romania upon completion of his prison term.
