Offence Summary

John Last admitted to making 98 indecent images of children, including 29 Category A images, and received a suspended 35-week prison sentence along with a Sexual Harm Prevention Order.

Full Description

John Last, a 79-year-old pensioner from Ipswich, appeared before Suffolk Magistrates’ Court where he pleaded guilty to three counts of making indecent images of children. The offences occurred between February 2021 and November 2023, during which time Last accessed a total of 98 indecent images, categorised as 29 in the most serious Category A, 17 in Category B, and 52 in Category C.

According to court proceedings reported by the Ipswich Star, Last claimed he had searched for the images 'out of curiosity' and viewed them only once, after which he was 'bombarded' with pop-up advertisements. It was stated in court that he had not sought out the material for sexual gratification. The term 'making' indecent images, as defined by the Crown Prosecution Service, encompasses actions such as downloading images, opening email attachments, or accessing websites where such content appears via pop-ups.

The magistrates took into account Last's advanced age and ill-health when determining the sentence. He was given a 35-week prison term, which was suspended for one year. Additionally, a Sexual Harm Prevention Order was imposed, requiring Last to register with the police for the next 10 years to monitor his activities and prevent further harm.

This case highlights the legal consequences of accessing indecent images of children, even unintentionally, under UK law. The Suffolk Constabulary investigated the matter, leading to Last's court appearance on Monday.
