Offence Summary

Andrew Nicholson raped two women, one while she slept, and sexually assaulted three women in separate incidents, filming one of the assaults. He was sentenced to 14 years in prison at Durham Crown Court.

Full Description

A man from Consett has been imprisoned for a series of brutal sexual attacks on multiple women. Andrew Nicholson, aged 30, admitted to two counts of rape and two counts of sexual assault involving three women in separate incidents. The offences, described as truly abhorrent by investigating officers, included assaults on victims who were asleep and unaware of the attacks, as well as one where the victim awoke during the ordeal but Nicholson continued regardless.

Detectives from Durham Constabulary launched an investigation following the rape of one woman, which uncovered disturbing evidence of further crimes. During their enquiries, officers discovered footage that Nicholson had filmed of himself raping another woman, providing crucial proof of his predatory behaviour. This evidence was instrumental in building the case against him.

At Durham Crown Court last week, Nicholson was sentenced to 14 years in prison. He must serve two-thirds of his sentence before being eligible for release on licence. In addition to his custodial term, he was made subject to a Sexual Harm Prevention Order (SHPO) and restraining orders against all three victims, each lasting 15 years. These measures aim to protect the public and prevent future offending.

Detective Constable Hanna Liddle of Durham Constabulary commented on the case, stating: “What Nicholson did was truly abhorrent. There are no excuses.” She also praised the victims for their bravery, noting: “I would like to commend the bravery of the three women, who have been through horrendous ordeals. I hope that now he is behind bars this will provide some sort of closure for them to start to rebuild their lives.” The case was reported by Durham Constabulary on their official website, highlighting the importance of reporting such crimes to ensure justice is served.
