Full Description

A 53-year-old man from Morecambe has been sentenced for possessing and making a large collection of indecent images and videos of children. Nicholas John Mynott, residing on Elkin Road, pleaded guilty to multiple charges related to child sexual abuse material at Preston Crown Court.

The offences occurred in Preston in 2020. Mynott admitted to making 111 Category A photographs of a child, which represent the most serious category of indecent images under UK law. Category A images involve penetrative sexual activity or sadism. He also pleaded guilty to producing 97 Category B movies of a child, which include non-penetrative sexual activity, and 1,185 Category C movies, comprising other indecent images not falling into the higher categories. These charges were brought under sections 1(1)(a) and 6 of the Protection of Children Act 1978, which prohibits the taking, distribution, showing, or possession of indecent photographs or pseudo-photographs of children.

On Friday, 24 March 2023, at Preston Crown Court, Mynott was sentenced to a 10-month jail term, suspended for two years. In addition to the suspended sentence, the court imposed a 10-year Sexual Harm Prevention Order (SHPO) to restrict his activities and protect the public from further harm. He was also required to complete a 45-day Rehabilitation Activity Requirement (RAR) aimed at addressing his offending behaviour, and a restraining order was granted to prevent contact with potential victims or related individuals.

The case was handled by Lancashire Constabulary, the prosecuting police force for the region, highlighting ongoing efforts to combat child sexual exploitation through digital means. Court records confirm the guilty pleas and sentencing details, with no further appeals noted in available sources. This sentencing reflects the judiciary's approach to balancing punishment with rehabilitation for such offences while ensuring long-term safeguards.
