Offence Summary

Darren Kendall, a paedophile from Hartlepool, was caught communicating sexually with an undercover police officer posing as a 14-year-old boy while on bail for possessing and distributing over 1,000 indecent images of children. He was sentenced to 32 months in prison and received a sexual harm prevention order.

Full Description

Darren Kendall, a 54-year-old resident of Hartlepool, was convicted at Teesside Crown Court for a series of serious sexual offences involving children. The case came to light after Kendall was initially arrested and bailed for possessing a large collection of indecent images of children, discovered on his mobile phone and hard drive. These images, dating from between 2015 and 2025, included 1,055 indecent photographs, with 316 classified as category A—the most severe—458 category B, and 280 category C. Additionally, Kendall had distributed indecent images to others in two separate online chats and was in possession of 2,137 images of extreme pornography involving animals, as well as a prohibited image of a child.

While on bail for these offences, Kendall engaged in further criminal activity by communicating online via Snapchat with an individual he believed to be a 14-year-old boy. Unbeknownst to him, this was an undercover police officer from Cleveland Police. The conversations quickly turned sexual in nature, with Kendall exchanging images and discussing explicit topics with the supposed underage boy. Prosecutor Caoimhe Bicknell detailed these interactions during the court hearing in Middlesbrough, emphasising the predatory intent behind Kendall's actions.

Kendall pleaded guilty to three counts of distributing indecent images of children, three counts of making indecent images, two offences of possessing extreme pornography, possessing a prohibited image of a child, and attempted sexual communication with a child. In his defence, Nathan Davis explained that Kendall's offending began after the death of his mother, for whom he had been a primary carer, leading to the development of an alcohol addiction. Davis noted that Kendall had since addressed his addiction, cut ties with the online community involved, and expressed shock and disgust at his own behaviour, though he struggled to admit any sexual interest in children.

Judge Advocate Thomas Mitchell, presiding over the case, rejected any mitigation based on personal circumstances, stating unequivocally: 'I have no doubt you have a sexual interest in children. It's the only possible explanation both for the material you have and also the conversation that you had with the police officer.' The judge highlighted the gravity of distributing such images, declaring: 'This court will not have it. Those who distribute images of these kind can expect to go to prison immediately for doing it.' He acknowledged the desperate turns in Kendall's life but deemed them insufficient to excuse his descent into criminality. Consequently, Kendall was sentenced to 32 months' imprisonment and made subject to a sexual harm prevention order to restrict future risks.

The case was reported by Teesside Live on 27 January 2026, drawing from court proceedings at Teesside Crown Court and statements from Cleveland Police. It underscores the vigilance of law enforcement in online child protection efforts, particularly through undercover operations targeting paedophiles.
