Offence Summary

Former Lambeth police constable Jordan Janssen was jailed for 12 months after pleading guilty to distributing and making indecent images of children. He was caught following an online investigation that traced emails containing such images to his computer.

Full Description

A former police constable from Lambeth has been sentenced to prison for paedophile offences involving the distribution and creation of indecent images of children. Jordan Janssen, aged 37 and residing in Maryon Grove, Charlton, appeared at Southwark Crown Court where he received a 12-month custodial sentence.

The case came to light through an investigation by the Metropolitan Police's paedophile unit. Officers were alerted when three indecent images were emailed by Janssen to a man in Scotland. Tracing the email back to Janssen's address, police arrested him in July 2023. A subsequent forensic examination of his computer revealed that he had downloaded 183 indecent films and images of children using file-sharing software Limewire.

Janssen, who had previously served as a PC in Lambeth, pleaded guilty to the charges the previous month. The court heard details of his actions, which involved both distributing the images via email and making them through downloads. Judge Debra Taylor, during sentencing, emphasised the gravity of the offences, stating: 'These are not victimless crimes. Children are often trafficked or forced into making these images. The downloading and distribution of the images contributes to the demand for and exploitation of vulnerable children.' She noted that the distribution count was at a very low level, involving only one email with three images.

In addition to the 12-month sentence for distribution, Janssen received a concurrent four-month sentence for making the images. He is required to sign the sex offenders register for 10 years and is prohibited from using the internet to contact anyone under 16. He is also banned from any employment that might involve contact with children under 16. Janssen resigned from the Metropolitan Police in June 2023 prior to his arrest.

The Metropolitan Police's investigation underscores the ongoing efforts to combat online child exploitation, with the force's paedophile unit playing a key role in identifying and apprehending offenders through digital tracking and forensic analysis.
