Offence Summary

John Evans was convicted of repeatedly sexually assaulting a young girl in Coventry during the 1990s, continuing the abuse until she was a teenager. He was jailed for 20 years at Warwick Crown Court after admitting to rape and indecent assault.

Full Description

A 59-year-old man from Coventry, John Evans, has been sentenced to 20 years in prison for a series of non-recent child sex offences committed in the 1990s. The abuse took place at an address in the city, where Evans repeatedly sexually assaulted a young girl over several years, continuing until she reached her teenage years.

The case came to light when the victim, now an adult, bravely came forward to report the historical abuse. Following her disclosure, West Midlands Police launched an investigation, leading to Evans's arrest in 2023. During police questioning, Evans provided no comment beyond confirming that he had known the victim at the time, but he eventually admitted to the charges of rape and indecent assault.

Evans, residing on Hearsall Lane in Coventry, appeared at Warwick Crown Court on 31 March 2026, where he was formally sentenced. In addition to the 20-year custodial term, he was placed on the sex offenders' register for life. The court recognised the profound impact of the offences on the survivor, whose courage in reporting the crimes enabled justice to be served after decades.

West Midlands Police emphasised their commitment to investigating non-recent sexual abuse cases, stating that they take every report seriously regardless of the time elapsed. This case underscores the importance of survivors coming forward, as it has resulted in the conviction of a dangerous offender.
