Full Description

A Southampton man, Benjamin John Hassell, aged 70, has been sentenced to seven years and ten months in prison for non-recent child sex offences. The case, investigated by Hampshire and Isle of Wight Constabulary’s Criminal Investigation Department, came to light after a victim reported the abuse that occurred in 1987.

The offences date back to 1987, when Hassell indecently assaulted a six-year-old girl at an address in Southampton. The victim, now an adult, bravely came forward in 2020 to report the historical abuse to the police, prompting a thorough investigation. During the probe, officers seized several electronic devices from Hassell's home on Clarendon Road, including a laptop, a digital storage device, and an SD card. Forensic examination of these items uncovered more than 2000 indecent images of children, leading to Hassell pleading guilty to seven charges related to making such images.

Regarding the indecent assault charge, Hassell initially pleaded not guilty. However, following a trial at Southampton Crown Court in May 2024, a jury found him guilty of the offence. The sentencing took place on 26 July 2024, reflecting the severity of the crimes committed against a vulnerable child decades ago and the additional discovery of child exploitation material.

Detective Constable Mark Gallagher, who led the investigation, commended the victim's courage, stating: “I would like to thank the woman involved in this case for the bravery and tenacity she has shown, not only in coming forward to speak to us, but also throughout the investigation and criminal justice process. Her courage has meant that Hassell faced justice.” This case underscores the importance of reporting historical sexual abuse, as highlighted by the constabulary's commitment to supporting victims through specialist detectives.

The conviction was reported by Hampshire and Isle of Wight Constabulary on their official website, emphasising their ongoing efforts to address child sexual exploitation.
