Offence Summary

Former Rastrick High School teacher Aaron Waterworth engaged in sexualised conversations with an underage boy on Grindr and Snapchat, sending indecent images despite knowing the boy's age. He received an 11-month suspended sentence.

Full Description

Aaron Waterworth, a former teacher at Rastrick High School in Brighouse, West Yorkshire, avoided immediate prison this week after admitting to sexual communications with a teenager under 18. The offences involved grooming-like behaviour through online platforms, exploiting his position of trust indirectly through digital means.

The court heard that Waterworth initiated contact on Grindr, a dating app, and continued the conversation on Snapchat after learning the boy was underage. Despite this knowledge, he inquired about the boy's previous sexual experiences and discussed taking his virginity. Waterworth then escalated by sending a photo of his own penis and an indecent video, actions that clearly constituted sexual exploitation of a minor.

Following a report to authorities, West Yorkshire Police launched an investigation, leading to Waterworth's arrest. He appeared at a Yorkshire court where he was sentenced to 11 months' imprisonment, suspended for two years, along with additional measures such as registration on the sex offenders' list. The judge noted the breach of trust inherent in Waterworth's former role as an educator, stating, 'Your actions were predatory and unacceptable, particularly given your professional background.' The victim impact was not detailed publicly, but the case prompted reviews of online safety education in schools. West Yorkshire Police highlighted the importance of reporting such incidents, affirming, 'We encourage anyone affected by online grooming to come forward; justice can be achieved.'
