Offence Summary

Jonathan Wilson shared indecent images of children with other paedophiles via WhatsApp and Telegram and possessed hundreds of such images on his devices. He was jailed for 28 months at Leicester Crown Court after pleading guilty to multiple counts of possession and distribution of illegal images.

Full Description

Jonathan Wilson, a 39-year-old man from the Market Harborough area in Leicestershire, was involved in the possession and distribution of child sex abuse material. His home was raided by Leicestershire Police in 2023, during which officers seized his electronic devices and discovered hundreds of indecent images of children, some of which he had retained for over six years.

The investigation revealed that Wilson had engaged in 'sexual' chats with nearly 200 other paedophiles on platforms including WhatsApp, Telegram, and Kik Messenger. Police obtained thousands of messages from his phone, evidencing the sharing of obscene images and videos. Wilson pleaded guilty to three counts of possessing illegal images and videos, three counts of distribution, and additional counts related to possessing extreme images involving sadism and bestiality. In total, he possessed 71 category A images (the most severe), 138 category B, and 102 category C images, and distributed 10 images, including two category A ones.

At Leicester Crown Court on 4 February 2026, Judge Keith Raynor presided over the sentencing. The prosecution highlighted the seriousness of the distribution offence, with sentencing guidelines starting at three years' imprisonment. Lucia Harrington, representing Wilson, argued for a suspended sentence, noting the limited number of distributed images and describing him as largely a 'passive onlooker' on the platforms. She also mentioned his personal circumstances, including job loss, homelessness, mental health issues, and a drinking problem following his arrest, which led him to live with his mother on the south coast.

However, Judge Raynor rejected the plea for suspension, stating: 'A deterrent sentence is called for - these offences cause untold misery to children worldwide. Men who engage in the distribution of these pictures only encourage this wicked trade.' He further remarked to Wilson: 'You went down a dark path.' Wilson, now residing at Sandbanks Road in Poole, Dorset, was sentenced to 28 months in prison and made subject to a 10-year Sexual Harm Prevention Order to restrict his online activities.

This case was reported by the Leicester Mercury, with coverage by senior reporter Tom Mack, emphasising the role of Leicestershire Police in combating child exploitation through device seizures and message analysis.
