Offence Summary

Edward Watson subjected a child to repeated sexual abuse over a seven-year period starting in 1990 and was sentenced to four years' imprisonment following a trial at Canterbury Crown Court.

Full Description

Edward Watson, a 49-year-old man formerly residing in Garrard Avenue, Margate, was convicted of historic sexual abuse crimes against a child. The offences began in 1990 when Watson was approximately 13 years old, and the victim was much younger. Over the subsequent seven years, Watson repeatedly assaulted the victim, often locking them in a room before carrying out the sexual offences.

The abuse remained undisclosed for decades until September 2023, when the victim confided in a trusted relative. Encouraged by the relative, the victim reported the incidents to Kent Police, prompting an immediate investigation by detectives. Watson was arrested just three days after the report was made. He was subsequently charged with 12 sexual offences, including gross indecency, indecent assault, and unlawful sexual intercourse.

Watson denied all charges but was found guilty on every count after a 10-day trial at Canterbury Crown Court. On 5 March 2026, he was sentenced to four years' imprisonment. In addition to the custodial sentence, Watson will remain on the sex offenders register for life, and a restraining order was imposed to protect the victim.

Detective Constable Susan Kingsnorth, the investigating officer, commented on the case: 'Historic cases like this demonstrate that it is never too late to seek justice. Kent Police will always listen, we will always investigate, and we will do everything in our power to bring offenders before the courts. I also want to commend the bravery shown by the victim. Coming forward after so many years, recounting traumatic experiences, and supporting a lengthy investigation has ensured that this offender has been held accountable.' The case was reported by Kent Police on their official website.
