Offence Summary

Anthony Taylor, a 49-year-old boat builder, was jailed for 16 years after admitting to raping and sexually assaulting a young girl under 13, as well as creating and storing indecent images of children.

Full Description

A boat builder from Clacton-on-Sea has been sentenced to 16 years in prison for committing horrific sexual offences against a child. Anthony Taylor, aged 49, appeared at Chelmsford Crown Court on 21 July 2022, where he pleaded guilty to multiple charges including two counts of rape of a child under 13, two counts of sexual assault of a child under 13, causing or inciting a child under 13 to engage in sexual activity, and three counts of making indecent images of children in categories A to C.

The investigation began when National Crime Agency (NCA) investigators identified Taylor through his use of a cloud account to store indecent images of children. Some of these images were created by Taylor himself using photo editing software. He was arrested on 7 December 2021, during which officers seized 21 electronic devices, including laptops, tablets, and phones. Forensic examination of these devices revealed 40 indecent images on a computer hard drive, depicting Taylor raping and sexually assaulting a young girl.

Taylor was re-arrested on 3 February 2022 at an address in Clacton-on-Sea after officers discovered he possessed an undeclared electronic device, breaching his bail conditions and leading to his custody. NCA operations manager Graham Ellis commented on the case, stating: "Anthony Taylor has admitted to inflicting the most horrific crimes on a defenceless young child. The NCA works tirelessly to protect those affected by child sexual abuse and disrupt offenders who pose a sexual threat to children, ensuring they face justice." The court heard details of the abuse, including Taylor taking photographs of his actions, underscoring the severity of his exploitation of the victim.

This case highlights the NCA's commitment to tackling child sexual exploitation through digital forensics and international cooperation. Taylor's guilty plea spared the victim from having to give evidence, but the evidence gathered painted a clear picture of his predatory behaviour. He will serve his sentence in a custodial facility, with the court imposing the maximum penalties available for such grave offences.
