Hugo Delgado, a 22-year-old man from Woodford Green, has been sentenced to 10 years in prison for sexually assaulting two women in hotel rooms in Shoreditch, east London. The attacks occurred in October 2019, and Delgado was found guilty of assault by penetration, sexual assault, and trespass with intent to commit a sexual offence at Wood Green Crown Court. He will also remain on the Sex Offenders Register for life.
The first incident took place on the evening of 6 October 2019 at a hotel in Shoreditch. Delgado approached a lone woman in her 50s, claiming that the room she was entering was his. Later that night, he told reception staff that he was the woman's husband. Sometime after 5am, the woman was awoken by Delgado, who had entered her room naked and sexually assaulted her. She screamed and shouted for him to leave, prompting him to put on his clothes and flee the scene.
Less than a week later, on 12 October 2019, Delgado targeted another woman in her 20s who had been out with friends. At around 4.45am, he approached her as she walked towards Old Street. The woman later awoke in a hotel room to find Delgado performing a sexual act on her; she had been sexually assaulted. The incident was reported to the police later that morning. Officers attended the hotel and found Delgado in the room, leading to his arrest. Enquiries revealed that earlier that night, Delgado had unsuccessfully attempted to obtain key cards for two rooms at the same hotel.
While on remand awaiting trial, Delgado was additionally sentenced for one count of exposure against a female prison officer. Investigating officer Detective Constable Rob Johnston from the Metropolitan Police's Sapphire Investigations team described Delgado as a 'very dangerous man' who has now been taken off the streets. Det Con Johnston commended both victims for their courage and commitment in supporting the case, stating: 'Without their support Delgado may have put further women at risk.'
In her impact statement, the second victim expressed the profound effects of the assault: 'I am left with hours and hours of therapy, police phone calls, reminders of a trauma I hope will not follow me for the rest of my life and a challenge to find myself again and pick up from where I left off, despite what I'm still going through.' The case was prosecuted by the Metropolitan Police, highlighting ongoing efforts to ensure women's safety in the capital.
