Offence Summary

Stephen Taylor, a 49-year-old man from Middlesbrough, was sentenced to 13 years in prison for a series of sexual offences against children, including sexual activity with a child and controlling or coercive behaviour.

Full Description

A paedophile from Middlesbrough has been imprisoned for 13 years following a series of grave sexual offences committed against children over several years. Stephen Taylor, aged 49, targeted vulnerable young victims in a pattern of abuse that involved sexual activity with children, causing them to watch sexual acts, and inciting them to engage in sexual activity. His actions were uncovered after a report prompted an investigation by Cleveland Police's specialist Children and Vulnerable Adults (CAVA) team.

The investigation led to Taylor's arrest and subsequent charging with 17 serious offences. These included four counts of controlling or coercive behaviour, 12 counts of sexual activity with a child, one count of causing a child to watch a sex act, and one count of inciting a child to engage in sexual activity. The offences spanned multiple years, highlighting the prolonged nature of Taylor's predatory behaviour.

Taylor appeared at Teesside Magistrates’ Court on 19 August, where he pleaded guilty to all 17 charges. He was remanded in custody pending sentencing. On 18 October, at Teesside Crown Court, he was handed a 13-year custodial sentence, ensuring he will spend a significant portion of his life behind bars to reflect on the lasting harm inflicted on his victims.

Investigating officers PC Henry and DC Pugh commented on the case, stating: “Today, Stephen Taylor has been sentenced for his horrific crimes which will no doubt have a lasting impact on his victims. He now faces a lengthy time in prison to reflect on what he had done. I sincerely hope today’s result will bring the victims a degree of comfort. Our teams of specially trained officers will always do everything in their power to bring perpetrators before the courts. If someone is ready to report something to us, we are here and we will listen to you.” This case underscores Cleveland Police's commitment to protecting children and vulnerable adults from sexual exploitation.
