Offence Summary

Martin Schwarz was jailed for possessing over half a million indecent images of children after a police search of his home uncovered the material on multiple devices.

Full Description

A 65-year-old man from Weston-super-Mare, Martin Schwarz, has been sentenced to more than three years in prison following a police investigation that revealed he possessed over 542,904 indecent images of children.

The investigation began when Avon and Somerset Police received intelligence indicating that indecent images were being accessed at Schwarz's home address. Officers conducted a search of the property, leading to Schwarz's arrest. During the search, authorities seized 11 phones and external hard drives containing the vast collection of images, categorised across levels A, B, and C.

Schwarz was charged with three counts of making indecent images of children, possession of extreme pornography, and possession of prohibited images. He pleaded guilty to all offences at Bristol Crown Court on 10 November. Sentencing occurred on 6 March at the same court, where Judge [name not specified] imposed a custodial sentence of three years and four months. Additionally, Schwarz was required to register with police under the Sexual Offences Act indefinitely and was issued a sexual harm prevention order.

Investigating officer DC Katy Lewis from the Internet Child Abuse Team commented: 'Accessing or downloading indecent imagery of children is not a victimless crime; perpetrators often don’t stop to think about the lives of young children destroyed by the abuse that takes place behind it. These images depict the worst possible forms of child abuse and those perpetrators who access them create a market for further images to be produced.' The case was handled by Avon and Somerset Police, highlighting their commitment to tackling online child exploitation.
