Keith Cameron, a disgraced former paramedic and lecturer at Glasgow Caledonian University, was arrested by police at a graduation dinner in Glasgow on 30 June 2023, following the execution of a search warrant related to child sexual abuse material.
Fiscal depute Lee-Anne Barclay told Kirkcaldy Sheriff Court that police became aware in June 2023 that someone believed to be Cameron was uploading indecent images of children online. Officers attended his former home in Kirkcaldy at 3.50pm that day, but Cameron was not present. His then-wife informed them he was attending a graduation dinner in Glasgow. Police located him there and arrested him amid the celebrations, taking him to Kirkcaldy police station for questioning.
Examination of Cameron's mobile phone revealed 16 Category C indecent images of girls aged between five and 16, all naked or partially clothed and posing erotically. Some files dated back to 2021. Further investigation uncovered a 61-second video of a woman in her early 20s getting changed, from which Cameron had extracted still images showing her with her breasts exposed. In January 2022, he sent two such images to a friend via WhatsApp, followed by more in February 2022, captioning one as 'Slut '.
Cameron pleaded guilty to possessing indecent images of children between September 2021 and June 2023. He also admitted disclosing photographs showing another person in an intimate situation without permission in January and February 2022, under revenge porn legislation. Not guilty pleas to charges of voyeurism and breaching the peace were accepted by the court. Solicitor Dewar Spence informed the court that Cameron, who has no previous convictions, has since moved from Fife to Roseneath in Argyll and Bute and is now divorced. Sentencing was deferred for reports, and he was bailed. As a result of his admissions, Cameron is now on the sex offenders register.
Prior to these events, Cameron had a distinguished career: he joined Glasgow Caledonian University as a paramedicine lecturer in 2018 and was a qualified pre-hospital emergency care instructor. He had spent over two decades as a frontline paramedic with the Scottish Ambulance Service in Fife. In late April 2024, the Health and Care Professions Tribunal imposed an interim suspension on his paramedic registration, to be reviewed no later than 29 October 2024.
A spokesperson for Glasgow Caledonian University stated: 'We are aware of today’s verdict at Kirkcaldy Sheriff Court and can confirm Mr Cameron is no longer an employee at the university. Glasgow Caledonian takes very seriously the role our people have in representing the institution in the communities we serve. The safety of our students and staff is paramount. The university has safeguards and processes in place to ensure this is upheld at all times. '
The case was heard at Kirkcaldy Sheriff Court, with sentencing scheduled for 10 September 2024. Police Scotland Fife division led the investigation.
