Offence Summary

Robert Nelson Neill, a predatory paedophile from Folkestone, was convicted of raping a child under 13, multiple sexual assaults, inciting sexual activity with a child, and making and taking indecent images, leading to a 20-year jail sentence.

Full Description

Robert Nelson Neill, a 62-year-old resident of Folkestone, Kent, has been sentenced to 20 years in prison for a series of heinous sexual offences against children. The predatory paedophile was found guilty at Canterbury Crown Court of raping a child under the age of 13, alongside five counts of sexual assault, one count of inciting sexual activity with a child, four counts of making indecent images, and one count of taking an indecent image. These crimes, described in court as monstrous, were committed between January 2011 and October 2014, targeting two young victims.

Neill, residing at Castle Hill Avenue in Folkestone, pleaded not guilty to all charges during his trial. Despite his denials, the evidence presented led to his conviction. Judge Heather Norton imposed the 20-year custodial sentence, extending it by an additional four years on licence, meaning Neill will remain under strict supervision upon any potential release. In a comprehensive ruling, the judge also placed Neill indefinitely on the Sex Offenders' Register and issued a Sexual Harm Prevention Order, further barring him from any work or voluntary roles involving children.

The investigation into Neill's predatory behaviour was led by Detective Constable Rebecca Thomas of Kent Police. Following the sentencing, DC Thomas commended the victims' courage, stating: "Neill has abused two young children in a shocking and predatory way. They have shown a tremendous amount of courage and bravery to speak out against this man. I welcome the sentence Neill has received and I hope this serves as a message to victims that we take all reports of sexual abuse seriously, and we will be relentless in bringing offenders to justice for them." This case underscores the relentless pursuit by Kent Police in addressing child sexual exploitation and abuse.

The offences came to light through reports that prompted a thorough investigation, revealing the extent of Neill's actions over several years. Court proceedings highlighted the devastating impact on the victims, who demonstrated remarkable resilience in testifying. Neill's conviction serves as a stark reminder of the long-term consequences for those who perpetrate such crimes against vulnerable children. The case was reported by KentOnline on 9 March 2016, drawing attention to the ongoing efforts to protect children in the community.
