Offence Summary

Robert Squirrell admitted to making indecent photographs of children and was sentenced to a 12-month suspended prison term at Ipswich Crown Court.

Full Description

A 60-year-old man from Wivenhoe, Essex, has been sentenced for possessing indecent images of children after admitting to the offences at Ipswich Crown Court.

Robert Squirrell, of Colchester Road, appeared before the court on Wednesday following an earlier hearing on 23 February where he pleaded guilty to three counts of making indecent photographs of a child. The offences took place between June 2015 and December 2024.

During the sentencing, Judge Sarah Buckingham imposed a 12-month prison sentence, suspended for two years. Squirrell was also required to complete 20 days of rehabilitation activity requirement under the supervision of the probation service.

In addition to the suspended sentence, Squirrell was made subject to a Sexual Harm Prevention Order (SHPO) for five years. This order prohibits him from owning electronic devices with internet access unless they are registered with the police. He is not permitted to delete or manipulate his search and messaging history and must allow police inspections of his devices.

Squirrell has been ordered to register as a sex offender with the police for the next 10 years. His laptop was seized by authorities as part of the court proceedings.

The case was heard at Ipswich Crown Court, which serves Suffolk and parts of Essex. Essex Police investigated the matter, leading to Squirrell's arrest and subsequent charges.
