Full Description

A man from Telford has been sentenced to 15 years in prison for a series of historical sexual offences committed against a child. Piers Brilliant, aged 49 and residing on Wallshead Way in Newport, was found guilty following a trial at Telford Magistrates’ Court.

The offences, described as non-recent, involved severe abuse targeting a female victim under the age of 13. Brilliant was convicted on two counts of rape, one count of attempted rape, and 12 counts of sexual assault. Additionally, he was found in possession of indecent images of children and extreme pornography, highlighting the extent of his criminal behaviour.

The sentencing took place on Friday, 28 July 2023, where the judge imposed a 15-year custodial term. Brilliant will also be required to register as a sex offender for life, ensuring ongoing monitoring upon his eventual release. The case was investigated by West Mercia Police, who commended the victim's courage in reporting the crimes despite the passage of time.

Sergeant Tim Street of West Mercia Police stated: “We welcome the sentence that was handed to Brilliant by the judge, and that he will rightly spend time in prison for his crimes. I’d like to commend the victim for their courage in coming forward to report what Brilliant has done, and I hope this helps to show that we take all reports of rape and sexual assault seriously and will thoroughly investigate them regardless of how long ago they took place.” This case underscores the commitment of law enforcement to pursuing justice in historical abuse matters.

The prosecution's evidence, gathered over an extensive investigation, proved instrumental in securing the convictions. Sources from the West Mercia Police official release confirm the details of the charges and sentencing, emphasising the gravity of the offences and the protective measures now in place.
