Offence Summary

Registered sex offender John Carver possessed child sexual abuse images, including videos of babies being raped, and sold them to other paedophiles while blackmailing them for additional payments.

Full Description

John Carver, a 38-year-old registered sex offender from Stratford in east London, was sentenced to two years in prison in March 2026 for possessing and distributing child sexual abuse material. Police discovered images and videos depicting the rape of babies on his phone during an investigation in 2023, along with a document described as a 'paedophile manual'. Carver had been operating as a sex worker, selling these illegal materials to other paedophiles via online platforms and receiving payments through over 50 PayPal accounts.

Between his arrest in 2023 and sentencing, Carver absconded after being released from prison in January 2024, remaining on the run for a year. He was eventually apprehended in Norwich in January 2025, where officers found even more child sexual abuse images on his device. Further evidence revealed that Carver not only sold the images but also blackmailed buyers, threatening to report them to the police unless they sent additional money. This extortion scheme targeted vulnerable individuals within paedophile networks, exacerbating the harm caused by the distribution of such material.

The case was heard at Snaresbrook Crown Court, where prosecutors highlighted the severity of Carver's actions, noting his prior status as a registered sex offender and the extended nine-year sentence he received from another court during the intervening period for related offences. Norfolk Constabulary led the investigation following his arrest in Norwich, collaborating with the Metropolitan Police given Carver's ties to east London. Judge [name not specified] emphasised the profound impact of such crimes on victims, stating that the possession and dissemination of child abuse imagery perpetuates ongoing trauma. Carver pleaded guilty to the charges, leading to his immediate imprisonment.
