Offence Summary

Curtis Green violently raped a woman by repeatedly hitting her in the face during sex, ignoring her pleas to stop, and dragging her back to the bed when she tried to escape.

Full Description

A violent rapist, Curtis Green, subjected a woman to a brutal assault during sexual intercourse, repeatedly striking her and refusing to cease despite her distress. The incident unfolded when Green, aged 28, initially sought consent for sex, which the victim granted after his persistence. However, as the encounter progressed, Green became aggressive, punching her in the face with a closed fist and continuing the violence even as she begged him to stop and began to cry.

At Cardiff Crown Court, the sentencing hearing on Friday, 22 November 2024, detailed how Green callously dismissed her pleas, telling her to 'shut up' and mocking her with the statement, 'Rhondda and Valley girls like sex like that.' When the victim attempted to flee the bedroom, Green grabbed her wrists and dragged her back to the bed, hitting her multiple times more, which the court heard aroused him. Judge Eugene Egan described Green as 'sexually turned on by the use of violence,' noting his powerful, fit, and athletic build, and how he 'brutalised the victim.' The assault ended when the victim's screams startled Green, prompting him to flee the property in just his underwear and socks.

The victim captured photographs of her injuries, which were presented to the jury during Green's trial. In her victim personal statement, read by prosecutor Andrew Davies, she expressed the profound impact: 'I cannot begin to explain the devastation and all encompassing effect this abuse has had on my life. The abuse lasted less than an hour but the trauma will last me the rest of my life.' She described feeling like a 'prisoner in my own home,' emotionally numb, scared, and humiliated, with her dignity stripped away. The statement highlighted her struggles with mental health, intimacy issues, and suicidal thoughts, underscoring that no sentence could erase her memories.

Green, residing on Rhiwgarn Road in Trebanog, Porth, denied the charge of rape, claiming the encounter was consensual and that no injuries occurred. A jury found him guilty. The court considered Green's background, including a difficult childhood where his father abandoned the family when he was three, and the murder of a relative, but these did not mitigate the severity of his actions. He now has a partner and a three-year-old son.
