Offence Summary

Iain Willett, a convicted sex offender, was sentenced to 16 weeks in prison for failing to comply with post-sentence supervision and suspended sentence requirements related to his prior sexual assault conviction.

Full Description

Iain Willett, 27, of Furrlongs in Newport, appeared before magistrates for breaching the conditions of his post-sentence supervision and suspended sentence order. He admitted to the charges after failing to attend scheduled appointments with his probation supervisor on 15 October 2025 and 27 October 2025.

The court heard that Willett had been subject to a suspended sentence order imposed on 12 September 2025, following convictions for theft, assault by beating, and failing to comply with the notification requirements of the Sex Offenders’ Register. This order stemmed from earlier offences, but Willett's history included a more serious conviction in 2021, when he was jailed for 40 months for sexual assault, assault by beating, and kidnap. That sentence related to an incident on 23 August 2020 at Newport bus station, where Willett attacked a woman and attempted to drag her towards Church Litten Park. The victim fought back and escaped.

Defending Willett, solicitor Oscar Vincent informed the court that his client had secured a stable address and was committed to engaging with probation services. Vincent also noted that Willett had already spent significant time on remand. Despite these submissions, magistrates deliberated and decided to activate the suspended sentence, sentencing Willett to 16 weeks' imprisonment.

As Willett was led from the dock to the cells, he verbally abused the lead magistrate, calling him a 'd**khead' and telling him to 'suck your f**king mother'. The outburst occurred immediately after sentencing, highlighting Willett's non-compliance and disregard for court authority. The case was reported by Island Echo on 5 December 2025, based on proceedings at the Isle of Wight Magistrates' Court.
