Offence Summary

Joseph Healey led a vulnerable 19-year-old woman into an alleyway off Canal Street in Nottingham city centre and raped her while she lay frozen in fear. He pleaded guilty to rape at Nottingham Crown Court and was remanded in custody awaiting sentencing.

Full Description

On the evening of Friday, June 20, 2025, a vulnerable 19-year-old woman was subjected to a harrowing sexual assault in Nottingham city centre. Joseph Healey, a 43-year-old man of no fixed address, approached the victim and led her into a secluded alleyway off Canal Street around 8pm. There, he raped her as she lay frozen in fear, unable to resist the attack.

The incident came to light when the victim reported the rape, prompting a swift response from Nottinghamshire Police. Specially trained officers provided support to the young woman, who was identified as particularly vulnerable. Healey was subsequently charged with rape and an additional count of administering a substance with intent to overpower someone in relation to the assault.

The case proceeded to Nottingham Crown Court, where, on what was scheduled to be the first day of his trial on Monday, December 8, 2025, Healey entered a guilty plea to the rape charge. Paul Raudnitz KC, prosecuting, informed the court that the plea was acceptable and that the charge of administering a substance would not be pursued further. He explained that while Healey admitted to administering the substance, he did not accept any intent to influence the sexual activity, and its effects only manifested about 45 minutes after the rape occurred.

Andrew Wesley, mitigating for Healey, requested immediate sentencing, but Judge Mark Watson declined. The judge ordered a probation service report to assess Healey's risk of committing further sexual or violent offences, stating: "I want a report to assess his risk. (The victim) was identified as vulnerable and he (Healey) led her to somewhere secluded and raped her as she lay frozen in fear. I want a report on his dangerousness." Healey was remanded in custody, with sentencing to take place at a later date.

This case highlights the ongoing issue of sexual violence in urban areas, with Nottinghamshire Police continuing to support victims and pursue justice. The attack occurred in a busy part of the city centre, underscoring the vulnerability of individuals even in public spaces.
