A window cleaner has been jailed for 12 years after being convicted of a series of sexual offences against a young boy he groomed. Steven Butcher, 51, of Palm Court, St Buryan, near Penzance, was found guilty of 10 charges at Truro Crown Court on 1 June 2026.

The offences included rape, sexual assault and causing or inciting a child under 13 to engage in sexual activity. During the sentencing hearing, Recorder Serena Gates KC told the court that Butcher had used manipulation and non-violent threats against the victim, who was aged between six and eight at the time of the abuse. The offending occurred more than 15 years ago in Cornwall.

The judge noted that Butcher told the victim it was "their little secret" and that he still did not accept responsibility for his crimes. Recorder Gates imposed a 12-year prison sentence, of which Butcher must serve two-thirds before he may be released. He was also placed on the sex offenders' register for life.

Detectives from Devon and Cornwall Police investigated the case, which highlighted the long-term impact of grooming and sexual abuse on young victims.
