Full Description

An NHS healthcare support worker, Ieuan Crump, has been convicted at Cardiff Crown Court of multiple counts of sexual assault against vulnerable female patients at the Grange University Hospital in Cwmbran, Wales.

Crump, aged 27 and from Gilfach in Caerphilly, exploited his position of trust during the assaults, which occurred on the same ward in the week in question. The first victim, who had recently undergone an appendectomy and was complaining of stomach swelling, was subjected to an unwarranted bladder scan focusing on her groin area. Crump then took her to a private room where he inserted a catheter—a procedure he was not qualified to perform—and inappropriately touched her after instructing her to pull down her shorts and raise her legs.

Prosecutor Matthew Roberts described the acts during the trial as: 'This was done for his own sexual pleasure. This was sexual abuse of a patient in a highly vulnerable state, someone obviously in pain and distress and something which was obvious to the defendant.' The second victim, admitted with a bowel condition, endured an intimate vaginal examination and further probing of her bottom without medical justification, despite being in visible pain throughout the fake procedure. Roberts added: 'All throughout this totally unnecessary and fake medical procedure she was also in considerable visible pain.'

Prior to the assaults, Crump had prepared a 'no entry' sign to place on his room door, facilitating the privacy for these grotesque abuses of trust. Following a retrial, he was found guilty on nine charges, including three counts of assault by penetration. Judge Vanessa Francis informed Crump that he inevitably faces a prison sentence. He was granted bail pending his sentencing hearing on 18 December, and he is required to register as a sex offender.

The Aneurin Bevan University Health Board confirmed that Crump was employed as a bank healthcare support worker and trainee nurse at the time of the offences. The case was reported by the South Wales Argus, drawing on details from Wales News Service.
