Offence Summary

Andy Nzita Iwela raped a woman in her 20s after a party at his home in Middlesbrough, with the assistance of Muketar Ahmed, showing predatory behaviour and planning.

Full Description

In March 2023, a woman in her 20s was subjected to a brutal sexual assault at a house party in Middlesbrough, North Yorkshire. The incident, which unfolded at the home of Andy Nzita Iwela on Bush Street, began as a social gathering but quickly turned nightmarish. According to Cleveland Police, Iwela, aged 34 at the time of sentencing, orchestrated the attack by asking all other partygoers to leave before summoning his accomplice, Muketar Ahmed, to the property. The pair then raped the victim, with Iwela identified by the judge as the primary participant due to his evident level of planning.

The woman endured rape, attempted rape, and sexual assault, leaving her traumatised, as described by Detective Sergeant Marie Appleby of Cleveland Police. Appleby stated: "Iwela and Ahmed showed predatory behaviour which resulted in the rape of a young woman who was left traumatised." The attack was characterised as a "horrendous experience" for the victim, highlighting the profound impact on her life. Police reports emphasise that the perpetrators posed a significant "danger to women," underscoring the premeditated nature of the crime.

Following a trial at Teesside Crown Court, Iwela and Ahmed were found guilty on all charges. Iwela, of Bush Street, Middlesbrough, received a custodial sentence of 13 years' imprisonment, while Ahmed, of Staindale Road in nearby Thornaby, was jailed for 11 years. Both men must also serve an additional three years on extended licence upon release, a measure aimed at protecting the public. The sentencing, reported by BBC News on 21 March 2025, reflects the severity of the offences under UK law, with the court acknowledging Iwela's leading role in the assault.

Cleveland Police's investigation was thorough, leading to the conviction of these individuals. The case serves as a stark reminder of the vulnerabilities exploited in seemingly innocuous social settings, with authorities praising the victim's courage in coming forward. Sources including official police statements and court records confirm the details of the predatory actions taken by Iwela and Ahmed.
