Offence Summary

Thomas Hall, a 34-year-old man from Salford, used fake profiles to communicate with children, engaging in sexual communications and causing them to participate in sexual activities, while also possessing and making indecent images of children. He was sentenced to 11 years in jail at Manchester Crown Court.

Full Description

Thomas Hall, a 34-year-old resident of Salford, has been imprisoned for 11 years after admitting to multiple child sex offences involving online grooming and exploitation. The case, heard at Manchester Crown Court, revealed Hall's predatory behaviour in using fabricated online personas to target vulnerable children, primarily young girls, and coerce them into sending indecent images.

The investigation by Cheshire Police began in November 2020 following reports of a 12-year-old girl from York engaging in sexual communications with an unknown man in east Cheshire via a messaging app. Officers uncovered Hall's use of pseudonyms, including posing as a woman named 'Alex' and a teenage boy called 'Jack', to build trust with his victims. Hall exploited these fake identities by sharing fabricated stories to manipulate the children into participating in sexual activities and providing explicit material. The court learned that Hall had no regard for his victims, showing manipulation through his age and experience to prey on them.

  • Four counts of engaging in sexual communications with a child
  • Four counts of causing a child to engage in sexual activity
  • Three counts of making indecent images of a child
  • One count of facilitating the commission of a child sex offence
  • One count of possessing an extreme pornographic image of bestiality

During the search of Hall's former home in Cheshire, police seized mobile phones and electronic devices containing over 30 indecent images of children and 30 indecent videos. Additionally, seven extreme pornographic images and videos, including one depicting bestiality, were discovered. Detective Constable Peter Taylor, who led the investigation, described Hall as a 'predator' who was 'manipulative' and had 'shown no regard for his victims and no remorse for his actions'. Taylor noted that Hall's offending ceased only upon his arrest, and while the victims would never forget their experiences, the conviction aimed to provide some closure.

Sentencing occurred on Thursday, 24 October 2024, with Hall receiving 11 years' custody followed by three years on extended licence. He was also ordered to sign the sexual offenders’ register and comply with a sexual harm prevention order for life. The case underscores the dangers of online interactions for children, as highlighted by Cheshire Police's thorough probe into Hall's digital footprint.
