Full Description

Ryan Bird, a 30-year-old man from Ferryhill, County Durham, was sentenced at Durham Crown Court on 2 March 2026 for a series of horrific sexual offences against young children. Bird had engaged in online conversations where he believed he was speaking to a fellow paedophile, during which he boasted about raping two young children and sent several images he had taken of himself abusing them. This conversation was reported to authorities, prompting swift action from Durham Constabulary.

Officers were dispatched to Bird's home in Ferryhill, where he was arrested and taken into custody. An investigation ensued, with specialist officers from the force's Digital Forensic Unit analysing Bird's seized devices, including mobile phones and games consoles. The analysis revealed 885 indecent images of children, comprising 275 category A images—the most serious classification—362 category B images, and 248 category C images. Bird was charged with numerous offences, including six counts of rape, six counts of taking indecent images of children, two counts of inciting a child to engage in sexual activity, attempted rape, engaging in sexual activity with a child, sexual touching, and possession of prohibited images of children.

During interviews, Bird repeatedly denied the offences and claimed innocence. However, he later admitted to the charges at court. At the sentencing hearing on 2 March 2026, Judge Jo Kidd described the case as featuring 'the most grotesque set of facts' she had ever encountered, stating that Bird posed a significant risk of serious harm, particularly to young children. He was handed a 35-year extended sentence, consisting of 27 years' imprisonment followed by eight years on extended licence. Additionally, Bird was made subject to an indefinite Sexual Harm Prevention Order, placed on the sex offender register indefinitely, and indefinite restraining orders were imposed to prevent any contact with the victims.

Detective Chief Inspector Mel Sutherland, who led the investigation for Durham Constabulary, described Bird's offences as 'the worst I have ever seen in my 22-year career in policing.' He commended the professionalism of the investigating team, particularly Officer in Charge Detective Constable Gary Tinkler, and praised the bravery of the child victims, noting that their courage was instrumental in securing justice. The case was reported via an online tip-off, highlighting the role of public vigilance in uncovering such crimes.
