Ben Murphy, a 31-year-old resident of Sittingbourne, Kent, has been sentenced to six years in prison for a series of depraved sexual offences against children. His criminal activities spanned from January 2020 to March 2021, during which he used social media platforms to contact five children unknown to him, soliciting explicit images and inciting sexual acts.
Murphy's online predation involved asking victims to send images of themselves in underwear or performing sexual acts. In one particularly shocking instance, he incited a child to abuse their two-month-old relative, offering £1,000 in payment. He also sent indecent images and videos of himself to the victims and requested private calls to further perpetrate sexual abuse. Additionally, in February 2021, Murphy approached another child in a Sittingbourne park and demanded they perform a sexual act, but the child refused and fled.
Murphy contacted five children via social media between January 2020 and March 2021. He pleaded guilty to six counts of inciting a child to engage in sexual activity and four counts of possessing indecent images of children, some in the most serious category. While on strict bail conditions awaiting sentencing, Murphy committed a further offence in February 2024 by approaching two children in a Sittingbourne park, making an indecent suggestion to them. Despite pleading not guilty to the 2024 offence, Murphy was convicted following a trial at Maidstone Crown Court on 9 August 2024. He was sentenced on 13 August 2024 to six years' imprisonment, of which he must serve two-thirds before parole eligibility, followed by two years on licence. He is also required to sign the Sex Offenders' Register and is subject to an indefinite Sexual Harm Prevention Order.
Detective Constable Deniz Aslan described Murphy as 'a depraved individual who poses a considerable risk to young children in person or online. He made vile suggestions and sent indecent images to his vulnerable victims who were very distressed by his actions.' PC Nadine Stanton, who investigated the recent incident, added: 'Murphy showed himself incapable of following restrictions imposed by the court and a prison sentence was the only possible outcome. We would like to commend the young victims and their parents who have supported our investigation throughout and assisted us to bring this predator to justice.'
The case was investigated by Kent Police, with CCTV footage playing a key role in identifying Murphy after the 2024 park incident. This comprehensive account is based on reporting from Kent Live, detailing the full extent of Murphy's offences and the judicial response.
