Offence Summary

Ionut Ion raped two trafficked Romanian women at a brothel in Preston and was involved in keeping the premises used for prostitution.

Full Description

Three Romanian men, including Ionut Ion, were convicted at Preston Crown Court of serious sexual offences involving the trafficking and exploitation of two young women. The case emerged from a tip-off to Lancashire Police via a tweet about potential underage girls at a brothel on Longworth Street in Preston. A raid in July 2015 led to the rescue of the two 18-year-old Romanian victims, who had arrived in the UK just two weeks prior.

Ionut Ion, aged 35, was already present at the brothel when the women were brought in by Marius Petre and Adrian Matei under the false promise of hotel maid jobs. He raped both women and was convicted of keeping a brothel used for prostitution, as well as two counts of rape. The victims were forced into prostitution, performing sexual acts on customers while enduring threats of violence to themselves and their families.

Detective Inspector Jane Webb of Lancashire Police noted that the women were 'thankful for being rescued from the evil men that subjected them to such abhorrent crimes' and are receiving support to rebuild their lives in the UK. Ion, along with Petre and Matei, all Romanian nationals, faced trial at Preston Crown Court. Their sentencing was set for 15 March 2016.

The operation exposed a human trafficking ring exploiting vulnerable women for sexual gain, with Lancashire Police's prompt action preventing further harm. The convictions reflect the UK's firm stance against rape, human trafficking, and sexual exploitation.
