Offence Summary

Michael McMonagle, a former journalist and convicted paedophile, was sent back to prison after breaching his licence by entering an online chat room without permission and violating his Sexual Offences Prevention Order.

Full Description

Michael McMonagle, a 44-year-old former journalist from Derry, Northern Ireland, has been returned to custody following a breach of his parole conditions related to prior sexual offences against children.

McMonagle previously worked for 10 years at the Derry Journal before taking up a role as a press officer for Sinn Féin in 2014. In 2024, he was convicted of a series of serious sexual offences, including attempting to incite a child to engage in sexual activity. For these crimes, he received an 18-month custodial sentence, of which he was required to serve half in prison and the remainder on licence. He was released from prison in August 2024 after serving his initial term.

However, just two months later, McMonagle's freedom was curtailed when his licence was revoked. He had entered an online chat room without obtaining the necessary official permission, an action that directly contravened the terms of his release. This breach also led to a violation of his Sexual Offences Prevention Order (SOPO), designed to protect the public from further offending by individuals convicted of sexual crimes.

McMonagle appeared before magistrates at Limavady Court, sitting in Coleraine, where he pleaded guilty to the latest offence. According to a report by the BBC, the court imposed an additional suspended sentence for the breach. Given that he had already served two months on licence, the revocation means he now faces spending the remaining seven months of his original sentence in custody.

This case underscores the stringent monitoring applied to convicted sex offenders in the UK, with Northern Ireland's justice system acting swiftly to enforce compliance with protective orders. The incident highlights the ongoing risks associated with online interactions for those under such restrictions.
