Offence Summary

Michael Quinlan, a former PE teacher at Royal Liberty School in Gidea Park, was convicted of sexual offences against male pupils, including indecency and grooming, leading to an 18-month prison sentence in 2004 and a suspended sentence in 2022.

Full Description

Michael Quinlan, a paedophile teacher at Royal Liberty School in Gidea Park, Essex, targeted and abused male pupils during the 1980s and 1990s. As a PE teacher, he groomed and exploited boys for his voyeuristic and sexual gratification, leading to multiple convictions for child sex offences.

In 2004, Quinlan pleaded guilty to indecency with male pupils at the school. The sentencing judge described his actions as 'grooming' and 'targeting' boys for his 'brand of voyeurism or sexuality'. He was jailed for 18 months. This conviction stemmed from historical abuse claims that emerged from his time at the school, which was then run by Havering Council.

Further offences came to light in 2022, following increased reporting after the Jimmy Savile scandal. New complainants came forward, resulting in additional convictions. Quinlan admitted to police that he was sexually attracted to blond, teenage boys. Despite this, he received a suspended sentence, avoiding further immediate imprisonment.

  • Quinlan's abuses involved sexual and physical mistreatment of pupils, with at least 13 former students alleging they were victims.
  • In 2024, journalists from Newsquest confronted Quinlan in Chelmsford, where he now resides. He stated he had only committed the offences for which he was criminally convicted and denied all others, offering no further comment on the ongoing lawsuit.

The case has led to a civil lawsuit against Havering Council by 13 alleged victims, represented by Andrew Grove & Co. In February 2024, at Chelmsford County Court, the council settled out-of-court with eight claimants. The remaining five cases are unresolved, and the council's barrister, Jack Harding, indicated that Quinlan might be called as a defence witness to testify against the accusers. Claimants' barrister Graham Goodwill described Quinlan as 'the most serious offender' who had been convicted in 2004, gone to prison, and received a suspended sentence in 2022. The hearing, presided over by Judge Robert Duddridge, also addressed procedural matters, including allowing the parents of a deceased claimant to continue as executors.

Havering Council declined to comment on the settlements or proceedings. The school is now operated by an academy trust with no connection to the historical allegations, and no current staff are implicated.
