Offence Summary

Harrison Hawkins was jailed for four-and-a-half years after admitting to sexually assaulting a child under 13, taking indecent images of a child, and possessing extreme pornographic material.

Full Description

Harrison Hawkins, a 37-year-old resident of Basildon, Essex, has been sentenced to four-and-a-half years in prison for a series of serious sexual offences against a child. The case, which came to light through an investigation by Essex Police, highlights the devastating impact of such crimes on victims and their families.

The investigation began in June 2020 when Essex Police received reports of indecent images of a child found on Hawkins' phone. Further allegations of sexual abuse emerged in November 2021 after the victim disclosed additional incidents to officers. Hawkins was interviewed about the allegations but provided no comment. He was charged with multiple offences, initially pleaded not guilty, but changed his plea to guilty midway through his trial at Basildon Crown Court.

Hawkins admitted to three counts of sexual assault on a child under 13, two counts of taking indecent images of a child, and one count of possession of extreme pornographic material. The court heard details of how Hawkins, described by the victim's mother as appearing 'charming, friendly, and shy' but ultimately a 'wolf in sheep’s clothing' and a 'monster', exploited his position to commit these acts.

Following the sentencing on 14 October 2024, the victim's mother expressed relief, stating: 'We have been believed and I would say to anyone else who finds themselves in this position to go to the police and report it. You will be listened to and treated with respect. It feels like a black cloud has been lifted from over our heads and we can start to rebuild our lives.' Detective Constable Ian Burgess of Essex Police paid tribute to the victim and their family, noting they had displayed 'immense courage and dignity' throughout the ordeal.

In addition to his prison sentence, Hawkins has been placed on the sex offenders register indefinitely, subjected to a 10-year restraining order, and a 10-year sexual harm prevention order. The case underscores the importance of reporting suspicions of child sexual abuse, as emphasised by the police and the victim's family.
