Offence Summary

Paedophile Robert Slight was jailed for 12 years for sexually assaulting children and making indecent images while using his role as Maldon Carnival chairman to gain access to victims.

Full Description

Robert Slight, a 45-year-old paedophile from Essex, exploited his position as chairman of the Maldon Carnival and volunteer at family events, including Santa visits, school, and cheerleading events, to gain access to children. Chelmsford Crown Court heard that Slight committed offences against more than a dozen victims entrusted into his care. He admitted three counts of sexual assault, one count of causing a child to engage in sexual activity, and two counts of making indecent images of children.

Prosecutor Jerry Hayes informed the court that some indecent images were taken opportunistically in public places. Additionally, Slight collected hair and baby teeth from children, storing them in plastic bags. He was sentenced to 12 years' imprisonment, required to serve at least two-thirds before parole eligibility, followed by six years on licence. Essex Police investigated the case, highlighting the dangers of predatory behaviour in community roles.
