Offence Summary

Anthony McFarlane was jailed for three years after arranging to meet a '14-year-old girl' following a sexually explicit conversation online. He admitted attempting to engage in sexual communication with a child and inciting sexual activity.

Full Description

Anthony McFarlane, 34, from Chorley in Lancashire, has been sentenced to three years in prison for attempting to engage in sexual communication with a child and inciting sexual activity. The case came to light through an investigation by Lancashire Police, who uncovered McFarlane's online interactions with what he believed to be a 14-year-old girl.

According to court proceedings at Preston Crown Court, McFarlane engaged in sexually explicit conversations via messaging platforms, where he arranged to meet the supposed minor for sexual purposes. The 'girl' was in fact part of a police sting operation designed to catch individuals attempting to groom children online. McFarlane travelled to the arranged meeting location, where he was arrested by officers.

During the trial, prosecutors presented evidence including chat logs that demonstrated McFarlane's intent to incite sexual activity with a child. He pleaded guilty to the charges, which highlighted the dangers of online grooming and the proactive measures taken by law enforcement to protect vulnerable young people in Lancashire.

Lancashire Police emphasised the importance of such operations in safeguarding children from sexual exploitation. The sentencing in July 2025 serves as a stark reminder of the severe consequences for those who attempt to commit child sex offences.
