Offence Summary

Peter Phillips, a Brighton man, was convicted of raping and sexually assaulting a woman he met in Brighton, after grooming her with money, drugs, alcohol, and exploiting her vulnerability at a festival before taking her to a hotel.

Full Description

Peter Phillips, a resident of Madeira Place in Brighton, East Sussex, was convicted at Lewes Crown Court of the rape of a female aged 16 or over and sexual assault by penetration. The offences occurred in June 2025, when Phillips met a 34-year-old woman in Brighton and began grooming her by providing money and drugs.

According to the investigation by Sussex Police, Phillips continued his predatory behaviour later that month by inviting the woman to a festival. There, he encouraged her to consume alcohol and drugs, rendering her vulnerable. He then took her to a hotel, where he subjected her to a violent and sustained sexual assault before raping her. The victim came forward to report the incidents, prompting police to launch an investigation and provide specialist support to her and her family.

Phillips was arrested on 6 August 2025 and charged on the same day with the sexual offences. He was remanded in custody following his arrest. On 20 January 2026, Phillips pleaded guilty to both charges at Lewes Crown Court. Following his conviction, he remained in custody, with sentencing scheduled for 10 April 2026 at a court location to be confirmed.

Detective Police Constable Ryan Dale of Sussex Police described Phillips as a 'highly dangerous and calculated sexual predator' in a statement released after the guilty plea. The case highlights the courage of the victim in reporting the crimes, which enabled authorities to bring Phillips to justice. Sussex Police confirmed that the investigation was thorough and supported by evidence from the victim's account and subsequent inquiries.
