Offence Summary

Nigel Edwards, a registered sex offender, was jailed for breaching his Sexual Harm Prevention Order by deleting his internet browsing history, which violated strict conditions imposed after his 2021 conviction for making indecent images of children.

Full Description

Nigel Edwards, a 54-year-old registered sex offender from Gillingham, Kent, was sentenced to 14 months' imprisonment for breaching a Sexual Harm Prevention Order (SHPO). The order, imposed in 2021 following his conviction for making indecent images of children, included stringent restrictions on his internet usage, specifically prohibiting the deletion of browsing history on any device to allow for monitoring and safeguarding of children.

On 18 January 2026, during a routine compliance check, investigators from Kent Police visited Edwards' residence and examined his laptop. They identified irregularities in the internet history, leading to the seizure of the device. Three days later, on 21 January 2026, Edwards was arrested on suspicion of breaching the SHPO due to the deleted browsing history. He was charged the same day and remanded in custody.

Edwards appeared at Maidstone Crown Court, where he pleaded guilty to the offence. On 23 March 2026, he was sentenced to 14 months in prison. The court also confirmed that he would remain subject to the remaining five years of his original 10-year SHPO. This case underscores the rigorous enforcement of protective orders against convicted sex offenders.

Investigating officer Police Constable Harriette Barraclough commented: 'Court orders such as these are there so convicted sex offenders can be closely monitored and help us safeguard children. As this case shows we will do everything within our powers to ensure offenders like Edwards face justice.' The statement was reported in the official Kent Police news release dated 26 March 2026.
