Offence Summary

Rio Bunce was sentenced for attempting to upskirt a schoolgirl in a shopping centre and for sexually assaulting a 16-year-old girl by inappropriately touching her.

Full Description

Rio Bunce, a 22-year-old man whose address was given as HMP Bullingdon near Bicester, appeared at Oxford Crown Court on Friday, April 17, where he pleaded guilty to three counts of attempted upskirting and one count of sexual assault.

The court heard that on March 8, Bunce targeted a teenage schoolgirl in John Lewis at the Westgate shopping centre in Oxford. He took a picture up her skirt, constituting the attempted upskirting offences. David Parvin, prosecuting, detailed the incident, highlighting the non-consensual nature of Bunce's actions in a public setting.

On a separate occasion, on May 10 of the previous year, Bunce committed sexual assault against another 16-year-old victim. The court was told that Bunce met the girl outside Oxford Ice Rink and was invited to a field near her home with a group of her friends. He flirted with her, but it was not reciprocated. Bunce then leaned across and rubbed her trousers, attempting to touch her genitals. The victim smacked his hand away and told him to stop.

Bunce has a history of sexual offences, with four previous convictions for sexual assault and one for exposure, for which he had received a suspended prison sentence. Given his prior record, the judge imposed a custodial sentence of eight months for the current offences. However, as Bunce had already served this time on remand, he was set to be released immediately following the hearing.

The case was reported by the Oxford Mail, with images provided by Thames Valley Police (TVP). Prosecutor David Parvin's statements provided key details on the incidents, underscoring the impact on the young victims.
