Offence Summary

David Peter Chamberlain sexually abused two girls and a boy in North Yorkshire between December 2020 and June 2022, including multiple counts of rape, sexual assault, and sexual activity with a child.

Full Description

David Peter Chamberlain, a 37-year-old man from Selby, North Yorkshire, has been sentenced to 20 years in prison for a series of horrific sexual offences against children. Following a two-week trial at York Crown Court, Chamberlain was found guilty of 19 counts, including five counts of rape, six counts of sexual assault, eight counts of sexual activity with a child, and one count of child cruelty. He was acquitted on one count of rape.

The offences came to light in July 2023 when a teenage girl reported to North Yorkshire Police that she had been sexually abused by Chamberlain between December 2020 and June 2022. Subsequent reports from another girl and a boy revealed they had also suffered abuse during the same period. Detectives from Scarborough and Ryedale CID conducted extensive enquiries, leading to 20 initial charges against Chamberlain.

At the sentencing on 23 June 2024, Judge (name not specified in reports) imposed the 20-year custodial sentence, alongside a lifetime Sexual Harm Prevention Order and indefinite placement on the Register of Sex Offenders. The court heard how Chamberlain, described as a predatory paedophile, groomed his young victims before subjecting them to sustained and sickening abuse.

Detective Constable Pete Day, who led the investigation for North Yorkshire Police, stated: “David Chamberlain has been proved to be a predatory paedophile who groomed his victims before subjecting them to sickening abuse. Not only that, but he also callously maintained his innocence and put them through the additional trauma of re-living the abuse during the trial. Chamberlain has shown not one shred of remorse for what he has done. He has rightly been sent to prison for a considerable time and he will be subject to severe public protection measures for the rest of his shameful existence.” The investigation highlighted Chamberlain's lack of remorse and the bravery of the victims in coming forward.

This case underscores the vigilance of North Yorkshire Police in tackling child sexual exploitation, with the force securing justice after thorough detective work. Chamberlain's actions spanned over 18 months, targeting vulnerable children in the local community.
