Offence Summary

Terry Turner, a convicted sex offender, was jailed for two years after breaching his sexual harm prevention order by using a private browser to enter online chatrooms and engage in sexual conversations with three children under 16.

Full Description

Terry Turner, a 39-year-old resident of Church Close, Stilton, near Peterborough, has a history of child sex offences dating back to 2011 when he was first placed on the Sex Offenders Register. Despite being subject to a strict sexual harm prevention order (SHPO), Turner continued to offend by attempting to communicate sexually with minors online.

In August 2024, Turner twice accessed an online chatroom using a private browser to evade detection, as this method does not retain web history. He initiated sexual conversations with three individuals who identified themselves as under the age of 16. Despite being aware of their ages, Turner persisted with these inappropriate interactions, directly breaching the terms of his SHPO. The order explicitly prohibited him from using any internet browser that does not retain search history and required him to notify his police offender manager at least three days in advance if he intended to enter a chatroom.

Turner's prior convictions include further offences in 2020 and a breach of his SHPO in 2022. Following his most recent actions, he was arrested and investigated by Cambridgeshire Constabulary. On 8 November 2024, at Cambridge Crown Court, Turner pleaded guilty to three counts of breaching his SHPO and attempting to engage in sexual communication with a child. He was sentenced to two years' imprisonment.

PC Emily Heriot, the investigating officer from Cambridgeshire Constabulary, stated: “Turner was well aware his actions were not only wrong, but also in breach of his SHPO, as he attempted to get away with his crimes. We will continue to closely monitor registered sex offenders who have been released into the community to make sure they are adhering to their court orders. It is our duty and the responsibility of everyone in society to protect children.” This case underscores the ongoing efforts by police to supervise and enforce restrictions on convicted sex offenders to safeguard vulnerable individuals, particularly children, from potential harm.
