Full Description

John Newton, a 26-year-old man from Workington, Cumbria, was sentenced to 12 years in prison at Carlisle Crown Court for a series of sexual offences against a nine-year-old girl. The incident occurred in August 2014 when Newton entered a public toilet in Vulcan Park, Workington, with the clear intention of sexually assaulting the child. He had previously admitted to false imprisonment with intent to commit a sexual offence, common assault, and assault causing actual bodily harm during the attack.

The court heard that Newton, who resides on Fisher Street in Workington, posed a significant risk to children. Judge Paul Batty described the crime as 'every parent's nightmare' and stated, 'This type of offence is about as bad as it gets.' Newton was also found guilty of one count of voyeurism and two breaches of a sexual offences prevention order, highlighting his history of sexual misconduct. He will serve at least eight years before being eligible for parole.

Speaking after the sentencing, Isla Chilton from the Crown Prosecution Service North West described Newton as an 'extremely dangerous man.' She praised the young victim's bravery, noting, 'This young victim showed great tenacity in refusing to comply with the demands of a strange man, even in the face of violence. She then bravely called for help causing him to flee, before this particularly serious incident could escalate further.'

Detective Constable Inspector Mike Brown, who led the investigation for Cumbria Police, emphasised the danger Newton presents, saying, 'Newton presents a significant danger to children and the wider community and the court have recognised this by taking away his liberty. We thank the public for their assistance in this case. They played a big part in providing information and evidence that helped to build a compelling case against him that led to his guilty plea and subsequent sentence.'

The case drew attention due to its severity, with related reports covering the initial attack on 28 August 2014, charges on 27 October 2014, and the sentencing on 14 December 2014. Sources include BBC News and statements from HM Courts & Tribunals Service.
