Full Description

A former teacher at St Anne’s Catholic School and Sixth Form College in Southampton has been sentenced to 14 months in prison following his admission of guilt for non-recent sexual offences committed against three teenage girls. Leo Norman, aged 46 and residing on Peartree Avenue in Southampton, appeared at Portsmouth Crown Court on Friday, 17 October 2025, where he received his custodial sentence.

The offences occurred between 2014 and 2019, during Norman's tenure as a teacher at the school. He pleaded guilty to three counts of sexual activity with a girl aged 13 to 17, specifically under the adult abuse of position of trust provisions, at an earlier hearing on 11 August 2025 at the same court. Court proceedings revealed that some of the abusive acts involved sexual touching, which took place on school premises, including in Norman's office. Additionally, he made inappropriate comments to pupils that caused them discomfort and highlighted his exploitation of his authoritative role.

During the sentencing hearing, two victim impact statements were presented from women who had been abused by Norman as teenagers. These statements detailed the lasting effects of his actions on their lives. The case was investigated by Hampshire & Isle of Wight Constabulary’s specialist Operation Marmion team, which focuses on allegations of non-recent sexual abuse within institutions or by individuals in positions of prominence.

In addition to the 14-month prison term, Norman was placed on the sexual offenders register and subjected to a Sexual Harm Prevention Order for ten years. Detective Constable Laura Hardie, who worked on the investigation, described the case as 'shocking,' emphasising how Norman had abused his position of trust to perpetrate the offences over several years. The investigation underscores the constabulary's commitment to addressing historical sexual abuse, with the bravery of the victims commended for enabling justice to be served.

This case, reported by Hampshire and Isle of Wight Constabulary on 17 October 2025, serves as a reminder of the vulnerabilities within educational settings and the importance of institutional safeguards against such abuses.
