Stephen Byrne was convicted of raping a child under 13 and sentenced to 18 years in prison. The abuse occurred when the victim was a child, and she reported it as an adult, leading to his arrest and trial.

Full Description

A man from Dunstable, Bedfordshire, has been imprisoned for 18 years following his conviction for multiple counts of child rape. Stephen Byrne, aged 63, was found guilty at Luton Crown Court of five counts of raping a girl under the age of 13. The offences took place during the victim's childhood, exploiting her vulnerability and innocence.

The case came to light when the victim, now an adult, disclosed the abuse she had suffered to authorities. Detectives from Bedfordshire Police’s Protecting Vulnerable People (PVP) team promptly launched an investigation upon receiving the report. Byrne, residing on Luton Road in Dunstable, was arrested as a result of this inquiry. The trial, which lasted six days, culminated in his conviction, highlighting the long-term impact of such crimes on survivors.

On Friday, 13 March 2026, Byrne was sentenced to 18 years' custody, with an additional year on licence upon release. The court also imposed an indefinite restraining order to protect the victim, a sexual harm prevention order to restrict his future behaviour, and required him to register as a sex offender for life. These measures underscore the severity of the offences and the judiciary's commitment to safeguarding the public.

In a poignant personal impact statement read during the proceedings, the victim expressed the profound effects of the abuse: 'At the time the abuse happened, I was far too young to understand what was being done to me. I trusted him, and he took advantage of my vulnerability and innocence. I was sexually assaulted and raped at an age where I should have been safe, protected and carefree. Instead, I experienced emotional and physical harm that no child should ever have to endure. My childhood was taken from me. It makes me incredibly sad that this abuse has affected me for so many years, but today I finally feel that I can begin to heal.' Her courage in coming forward was praised by Detective Sergeant Natalie Miller of the PVP team, who noted: 'Firstly I would like to praise the victim for her bravery in coming forward and helping us bring another sexual predator to justice. This was a lengthy and complex investigation, and I am pleased that Byrne was given such a significant sentence and hope that this outcome will help the victim get closure now he’s behind bars.'

The investigation was conducted by Bedfordshire Police, whose efforts ensured that Byrne faced justice for the devastating crimes committed against the young girl. This case serves as a stark reminder of the hidden traumas that can persist for decades, with the victim's disclosure enabling accountability after many years.
