Offence Summary

Henry Renton, an 81-year-old paedophile already serving a 15-year sentence for multiple child rapes, was convicted of raping and sexually abusing a young girl in Northumberland after his status was revealed through a Sarah's Law application.

Full Description

Henry Renton, an 81-year-old man from Coldstream, was unmasked as a convicted paedophile through a Sarah's Law application, leading to his arrest for further child sex offences committed in Northumberland, North East England. Renton, who was already serving a 15-year prison sentence in Scotland for multiple child rapes, manipulated and abused a young girl, escalating from inappropriate touching to full sexual assaults and rape.

The abuse came to light when the girl's father received a call from social services recommending a Sarah's Law check, a scheme allowing parents to verify if someone poses a risk to children. The application confirmed Renton's prior convictions as a child sex offender. Subsequently, the victim disclosed the details of the abuse to her family, prompting police involvement. According to prosecutor Joe Culley at Newcastle Crown Court, the grooming began with Renton groping the girl 'accidentally on purpose', apologising, and giving her £5. This manipulative tactic progressed as he plied her with alcohol, paid her money, and exploited her feelings of guilt and sympathy by questioning if he was 'too ugly' for her, drawing her into sexual activity.

Renton faced charges encompassing two counts of rape, two counts of sexual assault of a child, five counts of sexual activity with a child, and one count of assault by penetration. He was convicted on all counts. The victim provided a harrowing impact statement, describing how the abuse had 'ruined my life', triggering physical sickness from reminders of Renton's smell or voice, nightmares, and severe damage to her mental health and self-confidence. She stated, 'I used to be a happy girl but not now,' highlighting the lasting trauma.

During the hearing, defence barrister Lorraine Mustard noted that Renton, formerly of Abbey Road, Coldstream, was unlikely to be released and might die in prison, given his ongoing 15-year sentence with an earliest release date in 2032. Judge Stephen Earl adjourned sentencing until 19 December 2025, informing Renton of the realistic prospect of a lengthy additional prison term. The case was reported by Chronicle Live on 11 December 2025, based on proceedings at Newcastle Crown Court.
