Full Description

James Anthony Elliott, from Newsham Drive in Newsham Park, Liverpool, has been jailed for eight years after being convicted of raping an 18-year-old woman. The incident occurred in August 2022 at an address in Birkenhead, Merseyside.

The case proceeded to trial at Liverpool Crown Court, commencing on Monday, 7 July 2024. Over three days, the jury heard evidence detailing the assault, leading to Elliott's guilty verdict. Sentencing took place on Monday, 14 July 2024, where Judge [name not specified] imposed the eight-year custodial sentence and an indefinite restraining order to protect the victim.

Detective Constable Andy Littler from Merseyside Police’s Unity Team, which specialises in rape and serious sexual assault offences, described the investigation as 'an extremely lengthy and complex investigation'. He noted that Elliott subjected his victim to further trauma by forcing her to relive the experience during the trial. 'And while no sentence will repair the damage Elliott inflicted on his victim, I hope this conviction has secured some justice for her,' Littler stated. He praised the victim's dignity throughout the process and emphasised that 'today’s results shows that violence against women and girls will simply not be tolerated and we will work tirelessly to bring perpetrators to justice'.

The court proceedings were handled under the jurisdiction of Merseyside Police, who led the investigation. The victim received support from specially trained officers following the assault. This case underscores the ongoing efforts to address sexual violence in the region, with Elliott's conviction serving as a deterrent to similar offences.
